T-Mobile’s G2

The T-Mobile G2 is a far more impressive beast than the operators’ other smartphones (though it is rumoured to be getting an iPhone later in the year). TMo was the world’s first carrier to launch an Android product, with the original HTC model, G1, but it has lagged behind its rivals in offering top-of-the-range phones. Now it has its own variant of the Samsung Galaxy S, the Vibrant, and the G2 to make up lost ground – and show off the qualities of its HSPA+ network, which at 21Mbps is far faster than AT&T’s (though this phone only goes up to 14.4Mbps).

The G2, as previously announced, has a 3.7-inch touchscreen, Qwerty keyboard, 800MHz Snapdragon processor, 5-megapixel HD video camera, music player and 8Gb microSD memory (with expansion up to 32Gb).
The latest version of Android, 2.2. or Froyo, and has a user interface with seven customizable homescreen panels, largely based on HTC Sense, though with a TMo twist. TMo has been trying to create its own identity on top of Android, with plans for its own cross-OS app store and developer program.

The G2 will have enhanced support for internet voice – while other carriers embrace preloaded Skype, this handset supports the new Voice Actions feature of Google Search, which enables voice commands for calling, sending messages, browsing the web and listening to music. It also offers integrated access to Google Voice from the homescreen, with no need for a PC.

Other features include one-touch access to Google apps and shortcuts
